Elric of melnibone books5/21/2023 Weak and sickly from birth, Elric is forced to subsist on drugs and potions to sustain his strength and health. He carries Stormbringer in a scabbard at his belt, and wears the ancient Ring of Kings on his left hand. When not in armour, Elric favours all-black garb, but has been known to dress as a mercenary, donning wildly clashing barbarian attire. Elric is normally attired in traditional Melnibonéan armour with a signature dragon helm. He is very tall, slender to the point of gauntness, yet elegantly muscled. He was born with albinism, making his flesh pale, his hair white, and his eyes a deep crimson. From the tapering, beautiful head stare two slanting eyes, crimson and moody."Įlric is a Melnibonéan, and as such, he is not exactly human. "It is the colour of a bleached skull, his flesh and the long hair which flows below his shoulders is milk-white.

The Lost and the Chosen by Ivy Asher5/21/2023 I'm up against elders who think I'm too powerful, a family who views me as a threat, and something lurking in the shadows that's been coming for me my whole life. That is, until I meet the boys, and trust me, they are anything but boyish. It's not going to be easy, and I'm not exactly welcome. Now, I'm looking for answers and trying to piece together what the hell is going on. I put that to the test when I run headfirst into a fight that brings all my secrets, and reality as I know it, crashing down around me. Lucky for me, I have yet to meet someone whose ass I couldn't kick, inside the ring or out. You would too if you'd experienced some of the weird shit I have: red-eyed monsters chasing me, markings on my body appearing out of nowhere, a strange power that crackles colorfully over my skin from time to time, and don't get me started on the weapons I can conjure up almost out of nowhere. My name is Vinna, and I've been keeping a lot of secrets. Explain why you`d rather that descriptor be used than ones that are less fraught.Īubrey Gordon, Author and Podcaster: I totally understand that many folks are uncomfortable with the word fat, most of us have learned that that is an unkind word to use. But one of the first things you write in your new book is that fat is a neutral descriptor primarily for plus size people. Right off the bat, I am just so uncomfortable using the word fat. Hercules by Geraldine McCaughrean5/20/2023 McCaughrean takes the bones of a real event, wraps it in immersive, imaginative detail and thoroughly real emotion, and creates an unforgettable tale of human survival. Cane, one of the men, sets himself up as a divine authority, praying for repentance, while Quill attempts to soothe the younger boys through story-and himself through memories of a young woman he loves. As the weeks stretch to months and the birds begin to leave the rock, the party fears the end of the world. But then, inexplicably, the village boat does not return for them. Told from the point of view of Quilliam, one of the older boys, (precise ages are never given the boys seem to range in age from around 10 to about 16), the trip begins as a grand adventure: scaling cliffs via fingertip holds, making candles out of dead storm petrels, and cutting the stomachs out of gannets to use as bottles for oil. In 1727, a boat set off from the sole occupied island, Hirta, dropping a small group of men and boys at Warrior Stac, a giant rock, for a fowling expedition. Kilda’s archipelago, far off the northwest corner of Scotland, is the most remote set of islands in Great Britain. In this Carnegie-winning novel, McCaughrean ( The Middle of Nowhere, 2013, etc.) turns a small piece of history into an epic, nearly mythic, tale. r/Arithmancy is now giving points! Charles dickens black house5/20/2023 Esther, Ada, and Richard become close friends, and Ada and Richard fall in love. They are thought to be likey beneficiaries of a large inheritance, but the endless nature of the proceedings, and the delays of the Court of Chancery, make this very unlikely. Jarndyce, as wards of the long complicated Chancery suit Jarndyce and Jarndyce. John Jarndyce, a kindly man who educates her and brings her to his house to be the companion of his other ward, Ada Clare.Īda Clare and her distant cousin Richard Carstone live together with Mr. After this aunt dies Esther is given into the care of a guardian, Mr. This child, Esther Summerson, has been raised by her godmother, who she finds out is really her aunt. She hides a terrible secret - before she met Sir Leicester she bore an illegitimate child with her lover Captain Hawdon. His beautiful wife lives with him, and is the apex of the fashionable world. He has a home in rural Lincolnshire called Chesney Wold. Sir Leicester Dedlock is introduced as the height of British Aristocracy. The title of the book is more indicative of the social ills and hypocrisy that Dickens addresses in it. That said, the Bleak Houses in Bleak House are not bleak at all. The term " Bleak House" refers to two different houses - the one owned originally by John Jarndyce, to which Ada, Esther, and Richard come to live with him, and to the second Bleak House, built for Esther and her husband at the end of the book. In telling the stories of four familiar species, Pollan illustrates how the plants have evolved to satisfy humankind’s most basic yearnings. I started reading it for reason and quickly discovered many other interesting topics. He links four fundamental human desires-sweetness, beauty, energy, and control-with the plants that satisfy them: the apple, the tulip, coffee, and the potato. In this entertaining young readers edition of the environmental studies classic, Michael Pollan demonstrates how people and domesticated plants have formed a reciprocal relationship. Oranges are the only fruit5/20/2023 When doing something wrong, Jeanette's mother sees it as "good" or "bad". Jeanette's mother is one of the antagonists of the novel, and does not like it when Jeanette does not follow her rules. The author, Jeanette herself, wishes to educate older and younger readers alike that you must accept who you know you truly are, even if that means standing out from the norm. Throughout the book, Jeanette falls in love with multiple other women, showing that it is her true desire to be a lesbian. This doubt is heightened when she discovers that she is in love with another woman. In the book, Jeanette is taught to adhere strongly to Christian philosophy, but she begins to doubt her belief after a while. Now older and writing this book for herself, the author wishes to tell readers that religion is not everything - while it can help you maintain your morals and something to believe in, it should not be running your life without question. Not sure who to blame for this - her parents or the church - she blames neither of them aloud. However, as she grows up, she begins to question if she is overly faithful. Since she was a child, Jeanette was raised with strong Christian core values, all of which appear to be good to her. Religion is quite an important theme to mention, as it plays such an important role in the book.
